Javon's Story
If you saw Javon at his high school during lunch today, you’d see him sharing the Gospel with and praying over his classmates. He is on fire for the Lord and a faithful member of a church here in Kalamazoo, now.
But two years ago, Javon had never even heard about Jesus, let alone stepped foot in a church. He had moved to the Eastside of Kalamazoo with his mom from Chicago to get away from the violence in the city. After he got here, Javon heard about the City Life Center from a friend and came to visit.
It was at the City Life Center that Javon heard the Gospel for the first time, and Phil, one of our City Life Leaders, saw him raise his hand to declare that he wanted to give his life to Christ. After club, Phil approached him to ask if he wanted to come to youth group at his church. Javon eagerly said, “Yes!” and started attending with Phil. Before long, Javon became a member of the church and started asking Phil to pick him up to take him to youth group as well as to church on Sundays.
Because Javon walked through those doors to the City Life Center that day, he now has a mentor here at Youth for Christ and is connected to a church family. While Javon is a hilarious, confident, empathetic young man, the defining factor of his life is his fire for God. The Lord is harnessing that incredible energy and using Javon to bring Christ to the other students at City Life Center in his leadership role as a Titan as well as to his friends at school every day.
Over 29,000 young people like Javon in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek have no connection to any church or godly influence. We are meeting these young people right where they are, building Christ-sharing relationships, and connecting them with local church families.
