If you came to our Eastside City Life Club on a Thursday night, you would meet Martel, a highschool senior, and immediately learn about his obsession with basketball. He’d probably crack a few jokes in his laid back way, showing off his dry sense of humor.
Throughout club that evening, you’d notice how much he cares for his friends and the people around him. He is quick to stand up for others and wants to make sure everyone is having a good time.
What you wouldn’t know, is that Martel tragically lost his dad at the age of four and his mom has raised him and his six little sisters on her own.
When the Eastside City Life Center opened, Martel was one of the first three students who started coming. He became a consistent part of our City Life Club and always listened to the teaching and was engaged. But it wasn’t until last year, on a Thursday night, when the Gospel invitation was given, that he decided it was time for him to give his life to Jesus! We celebrated with him and he joined our discipleship classes.
Learning about the W.E.R.X. program starting up this past Spring, Martel was eager to join because it’s important to him to invest in his future and education. He has been a diligent employee, working at New Way YFC Thrift Store, and has purchased his own car. Through the W.E.R.X. program, he now has a mentor, Dan, who he regularly meets with to disciple him in his faith and to help him develop his employment skills.
We are continuing to walk alongside of Martel at the City Life Center and through our W.E.R.X. program. It is a privilege to get to see him growing into all that God intends for him to be.
It is exciting that Martel, and our other eleven incredible W.E.R.X. students, are growing spiritually and learning the skills they will need to be successful in life and employment after highschool.
